Weekend Round Up November 2, 2017


The start of November means it’s time for the Fall Days of Design in the Georgetown Design District. Leonard Slatkin and Livingston Taylor are in town Friday, which is also Ladies Night at the Folger Shakespeare Theatre. On Saturday — Día de los Muertos in Arlington — there are more musical choices. And on Sunday, you can learn to pre-prepare holiday casseroles and/or paint watercolors mindfully.

Georgetown Fall Days of Design

The Georgetown Design District — D.C.’s original destination for 30-plus design, fine home furnishings and accessories stores — invites interior designers, design enthusiasts and shoppers alike to visit participating design and home furnishings stores for new collection launches, trunk shows and design consultations during the Fall Days of Design, Thursday, Nov. 2, through Saturday, Nov. 4. There will be Days of Design Cocktail Crawls on Thursday and Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and a Brunch Reception and Designer Q&A with Pillar & Post’s Daphna Peled and designer Darlene Molnar on Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon. Ladies Night at ‘Antony and Cleopatra’

The Folger Theatre at the Folger Shakespeare Library, 201 East Capitol St. SE, presents “Some Excellent Fortune,” a Ladies Night program at 6:30 p.m. prior to the Friday, Nov. 3, performance of “Antony and Cleopatra.” Participants will sample a variety of fortune-telling activities for an evening of oracles, soothsayers, astrological charms and a signature cocktail. Livingston Taylor at AMP by Strathmore

Leonard Slatkin Conducts ‘The Rite of Spring’

In this “Declassified” program on Friday, Nov. 3, at 9 p.m. at the Kennedy Center, former National Symphony Orchestra Music Director Lenoard Slatkin will conduct a concert featuring Stravinsky’s bold and famously controversial “The Rite of Spring” (somewhat off-season). Mountainfilm on Tour

Mountainfilm on Tour returns to D.C. on Friday, Nov. 3, and Saturday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. Started in 1979, Mountainfilm is one of America’s longest-running film festivals. A rich selection of films will be presented over two nights at National Geographic headquarters, 1145 17th St. NW, offering a multidimensional celebration of indomitable spirit. Tickets are $25. Día de los Muertos Celebration

For the 14th consecutive year, Arlington Arts Center, 3550 Wilson Boulevard in Arlington, Virginia, is proud to present its free Día de Los Muertos exhibition and event. This family-friendly celebration on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 5 p.m., will feature art activities, face painting, traditional dance performances by Ballet Folklorico Mi Herencia Mexicana and live music by Los Gaiteros Sanguashington. A Far Cry & Luciana Souza

Brazilian superstar Luciana Souza will join forces with the 17 virtuoso strings of A Far Cry to give voice to poet Carolyn Forché’s “On Earth,” a luminous meditation on life and loss, through musical settings by five of the most distinctive creative voices in indie-classical music. Holiday Workshop: Casseroles & Comfort Food

On Sunday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m., chef Jennifer Jones will guide participants through preparing and packaging yummy casseroles, perfect for a holiday potluck or an easy family meal during a hectic time. On the menu are creamy sun-dried tomato and red pepper ziti, chicken and sausage gumbo and spiced peach bread pudding. Mindful Watercolor Workshop at Glen Echo
