What is July's birthstone? A guide to the ruby's meaning, symbolism and more.

From zodiac signs and birth flowers to birthstones and even animals, many symbols represent someone's birth month.

People born in July can have one of two astrological signs: Cancer (born between July 1 and July 22) or Leo (born between July 23 and July 31). The larkspur and water lily also represent those born in July.

But what about July's birthstone?

Each month has at least one gemstone. Here's what you need to know about July's birthstone, including its symbolism, meaning and more.

July birthstone

July's birthstone is the ruby.

The gemstone's name comes from the Latin word "ruber," which means red. This is fitting since rubies are best known for their red color. The finest of rubies will be deep red with hints of purple, referred to as "pigeon's blood."

Rubies get their strong red coloring from the element chromium. "The more chromium, the stronger the red," according to the Geological Institute of America.

The birthstone has long been a symbol of power and was called the "king of precious stones" in ancient India due to its rarity and hardness (second only to the diamond).

Myanmar is one of the oldest sites for ruby mining. For over five centuries, the country's Mogok area has produced highly sought-after rubies, according to the GIA. Vietnam is also home to sources of the precious stone. Other countries that produce rubies include Mozambique, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar.

Rubies are often associated with wisdom, wealth and success in love. It was thought by some that rubies could predict misfortune or danger. Some even believed if you had inflammatory illnesses or other blood disorders, holding rubies would cure the aliments, according to the International Gem Society.

Besides being the birthstone for July, rubies are often given as gifts for the fifteenth and fortieth wedding anniversaries.
