EDUCATIONAL BRUNCH: L’Universite du Troisieme Age de Sudbury, noon at the Lexington Hotel on Brady Street. Lecturer Prof. Melanie Perron from the Laurentian University psychology department will discuss the topic of promoting the development of emotional abilities in children through reading. Art: Artists on Elgin is excited to announce its next show in the Northern Artist Gallery space is Dyes and Design by Ann Suzuki. It takes place from Nov. 3-28. Suzuki has created an exhibition of wearable art with her hand dyed silks. The wax and dye technique creates intricate patterns and colours that are only found in batik and are wonderfully vibrant on silk. The silks are then made into one-of-a-kind garments with a focus on jackets and special event outfits. Meet the artist and learn more about the process at the opening reception, which will be held Nov. 3 from 1-4 p.m. The show runs until Nov. 28. Artists on Elgin, 168 Elgin St., is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

OPERA: Opera Candy will be the subject of a talk by Robert Fabbro at the Sudbury Opera Guild monthly meeting Sunday, 2 p.m. in Room 2253 at Cambrian College. Everyone welcome.

BREAKFAST/BRUNCH: Hosted by the Knights of Columbus 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Ste-Anne-des-Pins parish hall, 14 Beech St., Sudbury. MUSIC: The Northern Brass Choir presents a concert at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity United Church, 217 6th Avenue in Lively. Josh Wood, conductor of the Timmins Symphony Orchestra, will be the guest soloist on French horn, accompanied by Charlene Biggs. The conductor is Dick van Raadshooven. The Northern Brass Choir is a community brass ensemble consisting of students through to retirees, including professional musicians, playing music in a range of popular musical styles. Admission is pay what you can at the door.

FALL FAIR: The Cartier Fall Fair goes at noon at the Cartier Community Centre. Craft tables are available for $15/table.

Music: The sensational, off-Broadway play Love, Loss and What I Wore plays one day only at the Sudbury Theatre Centre, 170 Shaughnessy St., on Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Written by Nora Ephron (When Harry Met Sally; Sleepless in Seattle) and Delia Ephron (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants), the play recounts comic and heart-warming stories of women at all stages of life. The comedy is not about fashion, but about pivotal events many women have in common. Women quite often remember what they wore or what someone else wore at life’s key moments. Directed by Judi Straughan, Love, Loss and What I Wore features a cast of five seasoned locals, including Anita Ansamaa, Yvonne Davidson, Sarah Gartshore, Chelsea Papineau and Amanda Pride, as well as the original artwork of Sudbury artist Monique Legault. Sarah Craig’s original musical composition for Love, Loss and What I Wore is featured as Craig plays live throughout the play. Volumes, shapes and materials are central to the artist’s reflection as he comes back to large-scale works after several years spent traveling light. This exhibition is until Nov. 9. BLOOD DONOR CLINICS: Gabrielle Myllmaki and Alex Stacey are hosting a blood donation event on behalf of their daughter Addylin at the Sudbury Blood Donor Centre on Barrydowne Road and challenging members of the public to donate in her honour. The clinics will be held 3-7 p.m. Nov. 5 and 6 and 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Nov. 8 and 9. Friends and family members will be donating blood 5 p.m. Nov. 5 and thanking donors for the gift of life that they gave their daughter. Addylin has been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic B-Cell leukemia. She has received several lumbar punctures, a bone marrow test, surgeries, chemotherapy, and blood transfusions.

art: At the Art Gallery of Sudbury, 251 John St., the exhibition Benjamin Chee Chee: Life and Legacy invites you to view paintings, as well as personal items and documents, from this nationally renowned artist.
