Turning to the stars for home inspiration is about to take on a whole new meaning this weekend.

Astrological style expert Greg Polkosnik — an Edmontonian whose horoscopes and work have appeared in Harper’s Bazaar and Teen Vogue — is bringing a different take to applying the astrological houses to your lives, and, in turn, your homes. Polkosnik’s presentation, occurring Saturday at 7 p.m., will show how the fundamentals of astrology can be adapted to home décor to create environments that reflect the signature style of the homeowners.

“What I’m doing for this show is new. It’s a novel way to approach this stuff. All the same, it is a very traditional use of astrology,” said Polkosnik, who will discuss each of the 12 astrological signs. “I’m going to be talking about broad themes. For instance, Leo has an association with actors and drama, so when I talk about a connection with décor I may suggest that you exhibit that dramatic side of your character when you put a room together.”

Polkosnik recently offered a similar presentation in North Carolina for High Point Market, the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world, that was very well received. He also had his latest book published recently — Star Struck Style: Astrology, Fashion, Celebrities and You. But the Fall Home Show will involve much more than astrologically fine-tuning your home, said Kristy Cairns, assistant show manager for Marketplace Events’ Edmonton home shows, which includes the fall extravaganza.

“I think consumers are going to walk away from the Fall Home Show feeling energized from the advice they’ve received from our presenters, over 200 exhibitors, and have had a chance to check out some of the coolest new products,” said Cairns.

Making nightstands noteworthy

Some of those new products were specifically designed for the Fall Home Show. In the Notable Nightstand feature, local lifestyle experts were challenged to create two different nightstands, one for a child’s room, the other for an adult oasis, starting with an item from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

Local blogger Kari Skelton used a kitchen cupboard door and rope to come up with an imaginative hanging night table for an adult oasis, while duct tape and a wooden crate came together to form a whimsical, sci-fi-like robotic version. Show attendees will bid on their favourites and decide which nightstands reign supreme, with proceeds benefitting Habitat for Humanity.

This year, said Cairns, the Fall Home Show has something for everyone. While stars like Kortney and Dave Wilson are popular, dynamic and Canadian, she believes a main stage with more than 10 different presentations and additional show features full of inspirational design and décor ideas will tempt visitors. Some of those design draws include Wall Street, Splurge vs. Steal, and Small Space Living, all put together by Rosalyn Lazaruk, owner of Edmonton’s Wicket Blue Interiors. Wall Street focuses on different ways to deal with a feature wall.

“It’s about bringing personality and life to areas of your home,” said Lazaruk. “Feature walls don’t just have to be painted a feature colour.”

Design inspiration

Splurge vs. Steal aims to show homeowners where to spend and where to save when it comes to decorating, while Small Space Living “is a 1,000-square-foot home that we’ve constructed to show some of the latest fall trend decors in home and design, showing how to get the most out of your kitchen layout in a small room,” said Lazaruk. “It’s got an interior courtyard and incorporates a smaller laundry into your master closet. It’s like walking through a small house or condo layout, and shows you how to not sacrifice design and décor even though you’re living in a small space.”

Lazaruk will also be on the main stage with a presentation called Insta-Worthy (as in Instagram-worthy) Kids Rooms.

“We’re all looking to social media for inspiration,” said Lazaruk. “I talk about what some of the trends for kids’ spaces are, whether its bedrooms or playrooms, and I discuss the material choices for those spaces that are kid-friendly and durable, and how to update the space as they grow up.”

Another presentation, this one from DIY & design expert Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault, focuses on High Style, Low Budget: Design Without Spending a Dime. “Leigh-Ann is one of those people who believes that great style and design isn’t just determined by the amount of money you spend,” said Cairns.

Home show highlights

Returning to the show are popular features such as the Help Desk and Ask a Designer, where experts will answer your design questions, as well as Food Truck Alley. While the Cooking Stage has a strong lineup with a large number of local chefs and restaurateurs, show home attendees can also expect a nod or two to Canada’s 150th birthday.

“I’m really excited about the Canadiana Lounge,” said Cairns. “It’s designed by the House of J, and the whole theme behind it is Canada’s 150th birthday. House of J has reached out to all of its suppliers and is designing this lounge with a true north Canadian theme and stocking it with Canadian wines. Everything in the lounge will be comfortable, and you’ll be surrounded by different elements of Canada to get a true north-inspired feel and style.”

Meanwhile, Design Through Time, designed by Jostar Interiors, also brings Canada’s 150 years into play.

“They came to us with this amazing idea go back in time as you walk through several eras, showcasing how design has evolved over the last 150 years,” added Cairns. “It starts with a 19th-century bathroom and ends with a contemporary masterpiece, and is set up as little vignettes, in sequence. It’s a really beautiful feature.”
